Treetop Detection in Mountainous Forests Using UAV Terrain Awareness Function

چکیده
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming essential tools for surveying and monitoring forest ecosystems. However, most forests found on steep slopes, where capturing individual tree characteristics might be compromised by the difference in ground sampling distance (GSD) between slopes. Thus, we tested performance of treetop detection using two algorithms canopy height models (CHMs) obtained with a commercial UAV (Mavic 2 Pro) terrain awareness function (TAF). The area surveyed was slope covered predominantly fir (Abies mariesii) trees, flown following (TAF) not (NTAF). Results showed that when TAF used, trees were clearly delimited, lower branches visible orthomosaic, regardless position. As result, dense point clouds (DPCs) denser more homogenously distributed along than NTAF. Two applied detection: (connected components), (morphological operators). components) 5% improvement accuracy (86.55%), comparison to NTAF (81.55%), at minimum matching error 1 m. In contrast, operators), reached 76.23% 62.06% alone, can sufficient sophisticated algorithms. higher number repeated points, leading an overestimation detected treetop.

Expressive Rendering of Mountainous Terrain
Painters and cartographers have developed artistic landscape rendering techniques for centuries. Such renderings can visualize complex three-dimensional landscapes in a pleasing and understandable way. In this work we examine a particular type of artistic depiction, panorama maps, in terms of function and style, and we develop methods to automatically generate panorama map reminiscent rendering...
متن کاملTopographic patterns in the phylogenetic structure of temperate forests on steep mountainous terrain
In rugged terrain subject to active geomorphological processes, the species composition of forest communities changes along topographic gradients over short distances. However, the phylogenetic structure of forests on rugged terrain has rarely been examined. Understanding such structures provides insight into community assembly rules dependent on local environmental conditions. To this end, we ...
متن کاملAutomated Detection of Tracks in Mountainous Terrain Using IRS-1C/1D Images
Road, railway and track networks are important features of satellite imagery. Automated detection of tracks in mountainous terrain using satellite imagery is a difficult task. The track and the shadow signature of the mountainous terrain are almost same. The presence of ridges and snow also creates a lot of ambiguity. Moreover due to poor sunlight condition in the mountainous terrain the images...
متن کاملHydrographic Feature Generalization in Dry Mountainous Terrain
A wide variety of climate and terrain conditions exist in the United States and optimal cartographic generalization techniques for one area of the country may not be suitable for another, particularly when working with surface hydrographic data. This paper presents generalization and data modelling to produce reduced scale versions of hydrographic data for a multi-resolution national data set, ...
متن کاملUAV In-Flight Awareness Concept
This work proposes an innovative concept, called InFlight Awareness (IFA), expanding the concept of Sense And Avoid and aiming situational awareness in both controlled and non-controlled airspace for unmanned aircraft. From events occurring either internally or externally to the aircraft, the proposed system checks symptoms (taking into account the capabilities of the platform), data from both ...
